Tiarnan McLarnon could not hide his delight after being crowned the new Irish Amateur Close Champion following a stunning 2&1 victory over Alex Gleeson at Tramore.
The 23-year-old Massareene plus-two handicapper was never behind against Gleeson and got off to the perfect start with three early birdies to race into a four-hole lead.
"It's been an emotional roller-coaster, but I've enjoyed it," said McLarnon. "It just all came together."
This was the Antrim man's biggest title to date, having only just scraped through to the matchplay stages.
After his lightning start, McLarnon saw his lead whittled down to two holes at the turn and just one after the 10th as Gleeson found his groove.
But a bogey on 11 handed control to McLarnon and, after another birdie on 13, he was well on course for glory. Gleeson then wasted opportunities to win at the 14th and 15th.
McLarnon said: "I showed my true golfing ability out there at times when it was tough. I always believed I could win. I wouldn't turn up if I didn't believe I could win."
