McIlroy pledges to play at Irish Open, despite high-profile US alternative
RORY McIlroy has confirmed he is to play at next year’s Irish Open, despite the fact that it will clash with a high-profile PGA Tour event in the US.
Said McIlroy, in a prepared European tour statement: "There has been a lot of speculation on whether or not I will play the Irish Open next year, so I am happy to announce that I will definitely play the tournament.
"For me the Irish Open has always been, and will continue to be, one of the most important events on the global golf calendar.
"It's our national open and it's obviously a title that I would love to win at some stage in my career."
The Open will take place from June 28 to 1 July in 2012. It has been moved back so as not to clash with Olympics in London.
