McIlroy opts for McDowell over Clarke for World Cup
Darren Clarke’s Claret Jug at the British open was not enough to bag him a place in China’s World Cup next November.
Rory McIlroy has chosen Graeme McDowell as his partner for the competition.
“G-Mac’s the next highest on the rankings, so it will be me and him again,” he said on the eve of the Irish Open in Killarney.
Because he is ranked number four in the world he had three choices – Padraig Harrington, Mr McDowell or Mr Clarke.
Mr Clarke moved up from 111th to 30th in the world rankings after his triumph at Sandwich two weeks ago, while three-major winner Harrington is now down at 64th.
Mr McIlroy and world No 12 Mr McDowell represented Ireland the last time the World Cup was staged two years ago.
But this time round, the Macs will be hoping to do better after finishing as runners-up to Italian brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari in 2009.
