Rory McIlroy needs to step up a gear if he is to achieve successive FedEx Cup playoff victories after a long day's golf at Crooked Stick, Indiana, the venue for the BMW Championship.

McIlroy was one of 36 players who had an early start yesterday in order to finish their weather-affected first rounds before embarking on their second 18 holes of the Championship.

He played 26 holes in total, and finished at four-under par for the tournament. He filed a solid 68 for his first 18, and 72 for round two, leaving him ten shots behind clubhouse leaders Roberto Castro and Dustin Johnson.

But given his stunning display in the Deutsche Bank Championship where he turned a four-shot deficit on the last day into a two-shot victory, the pacesetters will not rest easy.

Graeme McDowell improved by six shots on his first 18 to shoot 67 and get to four-under par for the tournament.

McDowell found his mojo in style with five birdies on the back nine .
