EUROPEAN skipper Paul McGinley left most of the players pressing for a place on his team at Gleneagles gasping as he opened Ryder Cup year with a sensational 68 in Abu Dhabi.

After soaring into a share of fourth place, one off the lead at the HSBC Championship, McGinley said he considers it "a vital part of my duty as captain to keep competitive on Tour".

"There are seven or eight hugely impressive young players who will be pressing for a place on the team at Gleneagles," he said. "The best way by far to get to know them is by playing alongside them in tournaments."

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, after rising at 3.30am to wish fiancée Caroline Wozniacki good luck at the Australian Open, shot a first-round 70.
