McDowell's mixed start

GRAEME McDOWELL recovered brilliantly after a nightmare start and then tripped up badly at the finish of his level-par 70 in the sun-splashed first round of the McGladery Classic at Sea Island in Georgia.

McDowell's prospects of following up on an impressive third place at the recent Dunhill Links by challenging for his first victory of 2012 this weekend at the Seaside Course looked gloomy as a double-bogey six at the fourth left him at three-over par.

It was a desperate opening for the Ulsterman as most of his rivals seemed to be landing birdies for fun, not least American Webb Simpson, who took the lead with a seven-under-par 63 and was joined by compatriot Zack Miller.

Undeterred, McDowell produced a sensational riposte on the par-four fifth where he hit a towering wedge from 103 yards right over the pin and looked on in delight as it sucked into the cup for eagle. However, after three more birdies, McDowell then slumped to a double-bogey six at 18.
