Maguires shine for Europe as junior battle hangs in balance
KNIGHTSBROOK can brace itself for a barnstorming climax to the Junior Solheim Cup after the Americans fought tooth and nail yesterday afternoon to get within two points of Europe going into today's 12 singles matches.
Hundreds of schoolchildren, who were bussed in from all around Leinster under a Junior Golf Ireland initiative, offered hearty support to Lisa and Leona Maguire as Ireland's teenage wonders led a near rout in the morning foursomes.
Europe lost the opening match, but the magnificent Maguires sparked a run of five straight victories by the hosts as they defied a brave back-nine rally by McKenzie Talbert and Summar Roachell to beat the US duo one-up.
Yet the twins didn't have it all their own way. Lisa and England's Charley Hull were beaten one-up by Lindsey Weaver and Mariah Stackhouse in the first of the afternoon's fourball matches.
Leona and Lauren Taylor registered Europe's only victory in a fourballs session which was won 4-2 by the Americans, leaving the match nicely balanced at 7-5 for the home team.
