Maguires head Irish challenge

Ireland field what looks to be their strongest ever side for the European women's team championship which gets under way in Austria today.

The hugely talented Maguire twins have until now played in the Girls Euro championships, steering Ireland to the title in 2009 and the runners-up spot last year -- but they have stepped up to the women's event at Murhof.

Leona Maguire was in the recent Britain & Ireland Vagliano Trophy team, alongside Irish team-mates Danielle McVeigh and Stephanie Meadow. Lisa Maguire -- first reserve for the Vagliano -- Karen Delaney and Charlene Reid complete the line-up.

"We have a great team -- they are all playing well," said team captain Claire Robinson.

Ireland have won the crown twice, but not in the last two decades. At La Manga last year, they ended up 14th.

Without the Maguires, the Irish girls will find things difficult in their equivalent event in Sardinia -- but they will still battle hard to make the top flight.

Irish women's team -- K Delaney (Carlow), Leona Maguire, Lisa Maguire (both Slieve Russell), D McVeigh (Royal Co Down), S Meadow, C Reid (both Royal Portrush).

Irish girls' team -- J Carty (Holywood), A Coyle Diez (Elm Park), H Henderson (Ballyclare), P Grant (Lisburn), O Mehaffey (Royal Co Down), C Ryan (Castleroy).
