Maguires bid for euro glory
The brilliant Maguire twins take their immense talent onto the international stage today to bid for glory in the European ladies individual championship in the Czech Republic, WRITES CHRIS SMART.
Both Leona and Lisa (15), from Slieve Russell, entered the 72-hole contest at the 11th hour to join fellow Irish competitors Victoria Bradshaw, Mary Dowling and Charlene Reid in the top-class field.
The Cavan sisters pace themselves well but decided this was an event they should not miss. They pulled out of last month's Ladies British Open due to exhaustion after the Curtis Cup in the States. They then played a major role in helping Ireland finish runners-up in the European Girls Team Championship in Denmark.
The Maguires will not be playing for Ireland in the girls internationals at the beginning of next month in Northern Ireland as they have been invited to line up alongside professionals in the Irish Open at Killeen Castle.
But they have entered the British Girls Open Amateur Championship at Royal Belfast the following week.
The Euro championship is being staged at Kunneticka Hora in the Czech Republic.
