Leona stakes claim in Baltray

ROYAL Portrush's Stephanie Meadow will play Lucy Simpson (Massereene), while Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) takes on local girl Carla Reynolds (Seapoint) in the semi-finals of the Irish Women's Close Amateur Championship at Baltray.

Meadow played solidly and held a two-hole lead over her Muskerry opponent Jean O'Driscoll on the 13th tee. But O'Driscoll squared the match before Meadow closed it out.

Lucy Simpson (Massereene) dispatched leading qualifier Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) in the morning and edged past Sue Phillips (Woodbrook) on the 17th hole.

Twin sister, Leona, raced into an early lead in her quarter-final but Sarah Helly (Enniscrone) rattled off three successive threes to peg her back only to fall at the final hurdle.

Carla Reynolds (Seapoint) blazed a trail in her match with Holly Robinson (Co Sligo) having dispatched Mary Dowling (New Ross) earlier.

Meanwhile, in the Ita Wallace Plate, Kelsey Coey (Clandeboye) overwhelmed a Anne McCormack (Roscommon) in the final.
