Maguire, 20, and her twin sister Lisa, are on a golf scholarship at Duke University in North Carolina.

Leona was elevated to the top spot in the world rankings after winning the NCAA South Bend Regional at the weekend.

The Cavan native, who plays out of Slieve Russell GC, beat former world number one and Duke team-mate Celine Boutier by a shot in the 54-hole tournament.

She shot rounds of 72, 68 and 72 to compile a winning total of four-under par 212.

It was her second consecutive win on the collegiate circuit and her third overall this season. This victory moved Leona up from second place in the rankings.

Lisa Maguire, meanwhile, has moved up 36 places to 814th.
