DESPITE the attractions of Croke Park, the poor weather forecast and the absence of our Major winners, the crowds flocked to the final day of the tournament at Carton House.

The numbers were so big that it took over 20 minutes to reach the car park from the turn off the Maynooth road that led around the back of the spectacular complex.

Yesterday's total was 24,173, making it 81,379 overall over the four days.

CADDIES DO IT RIGHT

NICE gesture by the caddies. As a breed they're not known for their generosity, but through the week they spread almost €1,800 around in tips to staff – and I'm told that was a lot more than the players did.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It could have been my name on it again. But, I mean, it's not to be. That's what this game is about. You don't know what's going to happen." – Offaly man Shane Lowry reflects on his 74, 69 weekend finish on his home course.
