The venue has been confirmed; Rory McIlroy has given it the thumbs up; now it's a question of 'show us the money' to complete the picture for the 2014 Irish Open to be played at Fota Island Resort from June 19-22.

The new owners, the Kang Group Worldwide, from China, have opened the doors of Fota to the Tour and are on the list of tournament sponsors, which also includes Failte Ireland, BAM Contractors, and Cork City and County Councils.

Collectively, the Irish Open's backers are likely to produce a prize fund of around €2.5m.

Meanwhile, Waterford-born Tour rookie Kevin Phelan has landed a sponsorship deal with the same company that first backed McIlroy -- Dublin-based investment boutique FL Partners.

Phelan (23) will be in action at Abu Dhabi this week.

Former European No 1 Ronan Rafferty celebrated his 50th birthday yesterday and is geared up for a return to competitive golf via the Senior circuit.
