Irish crash back down to earth
Ireland, after such a stunning performance in the European Senior Women's team championship, were humbled 7-1 by England in the Home Internationals at Sheringham on the Norfolk Coast yesterday.
The margin of defeat was a major surprise as they went into the round-robin series in optimistic mood.
Any hopes Ireland had of getting off to a winning start virtually disappeared in the morning when they were whitewashed 3-0 in the foursomes.
There was really no way back for the Irish in this format of three foursomes and five singles.
Donabate's Pat Doran, runner-up in the recent British Seniors championship, saved Ireland from an embarrassing 8-0 defeat as she defeated Jo Ashmore 4&3.
Sheena McElroy of The Grange battled all the way against Susan Dye before slipping to defeat, while the other players all lost out. Defending champions Scotland drew 4-4 with Wales.
Ireland will attempt to pick up the pieces today when they face Wales.
