The late Christy O'Connor Jnr wasn't just a wonderful golfer, he was also a talented golf course architect and he left his mark in Tullow, Co. Carlow, with the wonderful Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort.
The Galway man began his golf course design career in 1986, creating a nine-hole course at Haarlemmermeersche Golf Club in The Netherlands and over the next 20 years he built up an impressive portfolio of courses in Ireland, France, Portugal, Hungary and the Caribbean.
He was most prolific at home, where he designed or co-designed 18 courses, with 13 considered among the Top 100 in the country.
Mount Wolseley is regarded as one of his best and from September 8-11, it will host the Volopa Irish Challenge, with a host of home-grown talent - including former Walker Cup players Kevin Phelan, Gavin Moynihan and Gary Hurley - taking on the cream of the Challenge Tour for a €180,000 prize fund.
Working in partnership with the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) and Sport Ireland, Tetrarch Capital, the owners of Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa & Golf Resort (who also own Mount Juliet), committed to host the Volopa Irish Challenge at Mount Wolseley from 2015 to 2017.
