Harrington adds Honda Classic to schedule in bid to boost Ryder ambitions

TIGER WOODS and Padraig Harrington have both added the Honda Classic to their early-season schedule. The PGA Tour event takes place in a fortnight's time at PGA National.
Woods has qualified for next week's Accenture Match Play and was already listed to play the Cadillac Championship at Doral and Arnie Palmer's Invitational at Bay Hill in March before going to Augusta for the Masters.
Harrington failed to make the 64-man field at the Accenture, the first World Golf Championship of 2012. By returning to the Honda, an event he won in 2005, the Dubliner will give himself an added opportunity to make it into the following week's Cadillac Championship, the second WGC event of the season.
Harrington's seventh place behind Phil Mickelson at Pebble Beach last week lifted Ireland's three-time Major winner seven places to No 86 in the world rankings but he needs to return to golf's elite top 50 to play at Doral.
Should Harrington win this week's Northern Trust Championship at Riviera Country Club in LA, he'd achieve that target.
Though he is eligible for all four Majors in 2012, in Ryder Cup year it's vital for Harrington and every other player hoping to make Jose Maria Olazabal's team in Chicago next September to compete for the bumper ranking points on offer at the World Golf Championships.
- THREE Irish players feature on the preliminary GB&I squad named by Nigel Edwards yesterday for the St Andrews Trophy match with Europe at Portmarnock on August 31 and September 1. Alan Dunbar of Rathmore is joined by Ballymena's Dermot McElroy and Kevin Phelan of Waterford Castle in the 12-man squad.
