Shane Lowry is the headline golf star of Offaly, but the Faithful County is well represented on the GUI honours list.

Stuart Grehan from Tullamore has already won the East of Ireland and South of Ireland titles this season, and today he tees it up in the AIG Irish Amateur Close Championship at Tramore.

And Grehan (22) is not the only Offaly amateur making a big impression this season.

Lowry's brother Alan recently won the prestigious Mullingar Scratch Cup, which Shane also has on his CV, and played a key role in Maynooth University winning the AIG Leinster Senior Cup title last weekend.

Last year's winner John-Ross Galbraith is not defending at Tramore, leaving the way open for an impressive list of contenders to fight it out for the Close title.

The home challenge is led Robin Dawson, a member of the Irish team which won the Home Internationals last week.

He also comes into the championship in good form, following a top six finish in the European Amateur championship in Slovakia.

Veteran Pat Murray (44) is hoping to add this title to his 2009 win.
