Grants slips off the pace

GOLF

Stephen Grant slipped down the leaderboard on day two of the European Tour Qualifying School at Fleesensee and is struggling to stay in the hunt for a place in the next stage.

The former Shamrock Rovers striker from Birr posted a 72 for a 142 aggregate to drop from joint 15th place to 22nd, seven strokes behind leader Christoffer Lange.

Cian Curley is in 52nd place on 147, with Shane Franklin a stroke behind.

The Irish Sports Council has announced Team Ireland Golf Trust grants of €12,000 for Paul Cutler and €7,500 for Danielle McVeigh as they begin their pro careers.

"I am absolutely delighted," said Cutler. "The extremely generous support from the Sports Council is exactly what I need to kick-start my career."

John Treacy, chief executive of the ISC, said: "Paul and Danielle are products of the GUI and ILGU and it is important to acknowledge the enormous contribution of those organisations to Irish sport".

Leinster clinched their third inter-provincial schools title in a row, completing a grand slam at the Sportsground yesterday as they ran in eight tries in beating Connacht 53-0

Ray McIlreavy's side cruised to victory with a superb display, which included a hat-trick of tries from centre Rory O'Loughlin.

Leinster led by 17-0 at half-time thanks to tries from Ian Fitpatrick, O'Loughlin and Dan Leavy.

Further tries from Peadar Timmins, Billy Dardis (2), plus the accuracy of Stephen O'Neill's goalkicking sealed the win.
