GOLF clubs are searching for ways and means to attract new members, and Newbridge GC have found a way to bring in 31 newcomers. It's a boost for the club and the game that is certain to brighten the winter gloom.

Alan Darcy, from the club, admits the committee were pleasantly surprised.

They have 19 applicants for a deal whereby new members pay €27 a week over two years, which includes their 2011 subscription.

Another 12 are availing of an option to join for a yearly sub (€840), providing they have a member of their family who is already a member of the golf club.

The club is also offering a variety of easy-pay options for existing members.

"Over the last 18 months, despite experiencing some of the most challenging times for the country, Newbridge has built a new clubhouse and invested in the course, replacing six tee boxes and two greens along with redesigning a number of fairways.

"Our applications show that there are people out there who want to, and who still will, join a golf club if they are offered good value for money," he said.

Ruddy's bargain to beat January blues

"SHAKE off the slumber and the snow", is Pat Ruddy's clarion call to golfers.

Ruddy's European Club is ready for play and, to entice golfers from their hibernation, he has an offer of €40 per round -- it's normally €100 a round at this time of year -- from now until next Tuesday inclusive.

"I passed some courses that were still snowbound on my way to the European Club today, but I'm happy to say we have golf available," said Ruddy yesterday.

Ryder bidding hots up

THIS is Ryder Cup year for Wales, but already six countries are bidding for the 2018 staging in Europe.

France, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden are attending a symposium in London today organised by Ryder Cup Ltd to give them in-depth information about the bid criteria.

The next European venue after Celtic Manor is Gleneagles in 2014.
