US Open champion Graeme McDowell has been paired with deposed world No 1 Tiger Woods for the opening round of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

McDowell -- fresh from his brilliant win at Valderama last Sunday, which closed the gap on Martin Kaymer in the Race To Dubai money list -- will also play with another former Major champion, Ernie Els.

New world No 1 Lee Westwood has been paired with Phil Mickelson and YE Yang. This week's £10.5m tournament is the first since Westwood took Woods' title as the world's best-ranked player and, ironically, defending champion Mickelson missed 12 chances to replace Woods as No 1 this year.

Mickelson, Woods and US PGA champion Kaymer all have a chance to take Westwood's No 1 spot this week, and the latter is clearly hungry to make Westwood's stay at the top a short one.

"As in every event I play, I'm here trying to win," said Wood. "If ever there was an event that deserved to be the first Asian tournament to impact the top of the world rankings, this is the one. I've referred to it before as the crowning jewel of Asian golf."
