A blistering back nine gave Sergio Garcia an early clubhouse lead at the rain-delayed AT&T Byron Nelson Classic in north Texas.
When play did eventually get under way it was the Spaniard who seized the initiative despite just one birdie on his opening nine holes which started on the 10th.
Garcia hit a hot streak soon after picking up shots at his 11th and 13th holes before picking up four shots - two birdies and an eagle - starting from the sixth. A par at the last saw him finish his back nine in 29 shots for a seven-under-par 63. That left him two shots clear of a clutch of players including Ben Crane, James Hahn, Matt Kuchar and Scott Piercy with Chad Campbell one shot further back.
Elsewhere, Justin Rose has withdrawn from next week's BMW PGA Championship due to a back injury.
