ATTENDANCE figures of 31,000 for the three practice days at Royal St George's this year were 7,000 down on last year at St Andrews, but exceeded the previous year's figure of 19,500 at Turnberry.
Yet it's not so much Tiger's absence as the 'St Andrews Factor.' Huge crowds are drawn to the British Open at 'The Home of Golf'. Five of the top eight attendances in history were recorded at St Andrews, with the 230,000 who flocked there in 2000 dwarfing the 183,000 fans at Sandwich in 2003.
