Eagle finish boosts McElroy in Scotland
Ballymena star Dermot McElroy produced a sensational eagle three on the final hole at Southernness to grab a share of second spot in the Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship.
That three followed a brilliant second shot to the heart of the green and completed an inward-half score of 32 for a closing 67 and 72-hole aggregate of 281 – five-over-par.
McElroy, tipped by many to be the next big name in Irish golf, had started his final round indifferently. He double-bogeyed the second but picked up two birdies on the outward half.
Also on 281 was fellow Irishman Richard O'Donovan, who had been flirting with the lead throughout the weekend, and Moor Park's Callum Shinkwin.
The trio finished five strokes adrift of winner Garrick Porteous, the English international from Bamburgh Castle.
O'Donovan, the former East of Ireland champion from Lucan, went into the fourth and final round only one stroke off the pace but his hopes of lifting the title were scuppered with two double-bogeys, although he did manage a brace of birdies.
