Dunne's double bid
Maria Dunne, winner of the Irish Women's Open Strokeplay title at County Louth last month, bids for a national double when she competes in the Irish Close championship at Mullingar.
The championship starts on tomorrow and concludes on Sunday. Dunne (Skerries) was a beaten finalist as far back as 2003 when she lost to Martina Gillen.
Last year she reached the quarter-finals but given her Curtis Cup pedigree, her Strokeplay win, and her recent selection on the Vagliano Trophy (GB & Ireland v Europe) team, Dunne goes to Mullingar with her confidence high.
Paula Grant of Lisburn will also be among the fancied contenders. Grant was leading qualifier at the British Women's Amateur championship won by Leona Maguire last weekend, and won the Close in 2013.
Other past champions in the field are Mary Doyle, Mary Dowling, Lisa Maguire and Deirdre Smith.
