Dunbar has a field day
Alan Dunbar led the Irish charge in the 115th Amateur Championship in Muirfield, Scotland, yesterday with a champagne performance, writes CHRIS SMART.
The Rathmore star tamed the tricky North Berwick course with a sizzling, three-under-par 68. That left him just one stroke off the pace in the first qualifying round and put him in pole position to grab one of the top places in the knockout draw.
He was one over at the turn, but the Irish international produced a brilliant 31 on the back nine -- holing from 30 feet for a birdie on the 10th, holing another birdie at the next and rolling in lengthy putts on 15 and 16 for birdies.
"It was poor going out, but coming back I was delighted. I have no targets this week, I'll just see what happens," said Dunbar.
Cian Curley, recent winner of the East of Ireland championship, from Newlands, returned a superb one under par 70.
Portstewart's Paul Cutler kept in touch with the leaders with a level par 71.
