Doran leads Irish charge

GOLF: Ireland, after reaching the quarter-finals of the European Senior Women's Team Championship, are in cautiously optimistic mood as they go into action in the Home Internationals at Sherringham on the Norfolk coast today.

With Donabate's Pat Doran, second in the recent British Senior Championship, and Strabane's Helen Jones, among the front-runners throughout that tournament, they certainly have players in form.

Ireland took the wooden spoon last year, managing to secure only a half-point from their match with England on the final day.

There is plenty of experience in this Irish team and they should certainly give the other countries a run for their money.

Ireland start against England today, follow up by playing Wales tomorrow and end against Scotland on Thursday.

Ireland -- P Doran (Donabate), N Giblin (Dun Laoghaire), P O'Gorman (Laytown and Bettystown), H Jones (Strabane), V McBride (Belvoir Park), S McElroy (Grange), M MacNamara (Woodbrook). Captain: R English (Larne).
