Darcy, Smyth five off the pace

RYDER CUP stalwarts Eamonn Darcy and Des Smyth were tied-12th on two-under par after opening with steady rounds of 70 at the Portuguese Senior Open at Belas Club de Campo near Lisbon yesterday.
England's David J Russell and Jerry Bruner from the US shot sweet 65s to share the lead.
Jimmy Heggarty had to be satisfied with a level-par 72 after finishing with three successive bogeys, while his fellow Ulsterman Eddie Polland signed for a 74.
IRELAND'S Niall Kearney and Gary Murphy wallowed 10 shots off the searing pace set by Nicolas Meitinger on the Canary Island of La Gromera yesterday, after the German opened the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana with a fabulous first-round 62. Kearney and Murphy compiled one-over-par 72s.

REBECCA CODD had four birdies on her card as she posted a level-par 72 in the Lacoste Ladies Open de France, leaving the Carlow woman tied 49th, eight shy of the lead set by Parisian Cassandra Kirkland (27), with a sensational 64. Martina Gillen opened with a 76 for 85th place.
