Shane Lowry's hopes of playing in his first Ryder Cup were dashed this afternoon as Darren Clarke opted against including the Irish golfer in his team.
Clarke, who captains Europe in next month's clash with USA, chose Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters as his picks.
The Northern Irishman had indicated that he would use his picks to add experience to his team after rookies filled five of the nine automatic qualification places.
The selection of Belgian Pieters means that the team will now have six first-timers.
The omission will come as a bitter blow for Lowry, who looked a certainty to make the team midway through the summer. However, after a final round collapse at the US Open, the Irishman's form dipped and he missed out on both an automatic spot and now, a captain's pick.
In his press conference announcing the decision, Clarke didn't mention Lowry but said that omitting Graeme McDowell, Luke Donald and Russell Knox were 'tough calls'.
