Balbriggan's Robbie Cannon led the qualifiers into the knock-out phase of the Irish Amateur Close Championship at Tramore yesterday with a 36-hole total of 138 after a brilliant second round of four-under-par 68.

Cannon had halves of 33 and 35 and his highlight was an eagle three on the 532-yard ninth.

Teenager Thomas Mulligan of County Louth was firing on all cylinders as he returned a stunning 66 - six-under par - to equal the course record.

"It was just one of those days when everything went right. I really hit the ball well today and enjoyed my golf," said Mulligan.

Eddie Power rolled back the years to qualify for the knockout stages, despite double-bogeying the penultimate hole, with an aggregate of 147 - three-over par.
