Cabrera on pro-am list
TWO-TIME Major champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina and rising US star Nick Watney will join a stellar field for the fifth JP McManus Invitational Pro-am at Adare Manor on July 5 and 6, writes Karl MacGinty.
Including Tiger Woods, who is expected to bid for his second JP McManus victory in his third successive visit to this massive charity fund-raiser, 20 golfers from the elite top-50 in the current world rankings have committed to play at Adare.
Tournament host McManus explained at yesterday's launch: "When I asked Tiger last November 12 months, he said sure, he'd be here and I've not heard anything differently.
"We met (during US Masters week) at Augusta but we didn't discuss it. So until I hear he's not coming, I take it he's coming. I know Tiger Woods for some years and if he said he's coming, he'll be there."
Padraig Harrington, who won the fourth and most recent staging of the JP McManus Invitational at Adare Manor in 2005, attended yesterday's media launch along with Aston Villa's Irish manager Martin O'Neill, one of a host of celebrities who have committed to play in July.
Admission to the two-day pro-am can be achieved by wearing special caps which have been made for the occasion and which cost €50 each. A whopping €31.8m was raised for charitable causes in 2005, boosting the overall funds raised in the history of the event to more than €56m.
