Athenry's double delight

There was double delight for Athenry when they added the AIG Junior Cup title in Connacht to last Saturday's AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield victory.

The Galwaymen took the Connacht pennant with a comprehensive 3.5-1.5 win over Portumna and must now be highly fancied to go all the way to All Ireland glory at Carton House in September.

Athenry beat Castle Dargan 3.5-1.5 in their semi-final, with Portumna seeing off County Sligo by the same scoreline. But in the final Athenry's young guns proved to be the sharpest shooters, with Brian O'Connor, David Kitt and Darren Leufer all winning their matches to get them over the line.

It might not have been possible had it not been for Sean O'Connell, who also played his role in the Jimmy Bruen team the previous day, as his 19th hole win over Eoin O'Connell in the semi- final proved crucial.
