UCD trounce UUJ to book last eight spot
UUJ 0-5 UCD 1-25
UCD marched into the quarter-finals with a thumping win over University of Ulster Jordanstown.
The first quarter was nip and tuck with UCD clearly targeting some early scores. But some stout defensive work from Tommy Burns and Gerard Walsh held the backline together to prevent majors.
UCD had the standout performer in 2015 Young Hurler of the Year, Waterford’s Tadhg de Burca, and they pushed on in the second half, raining points from distance.
Opposing manager Ollie Bellew paid tribute to how UCD manager Nicky English has his charges motoring.
“Nicky has them flying. They are in good shape and going well but they are having problems getting their full lot of lads out,” Bellew said.
“They are a hell of a side. The way they worked together, they were brilliant all over the park. Nicky creates a good bond amongst players and teams and gets the best out of them.
“Whether they are good enough to go on and win, I don’t know. But he is certainly getting the maximum output from them.”
