Second half surge sees UCC overcome Maynooth to advance to Fitzgibbon Cup last eight
Maynooth 0-14 UCC 0-22
A GOOD start to the second half proved crucial as visitors UCC overcame Maynooth.
It was tit for tat in an enthralling first half, with the large crowd was treated to some exciting hurling as the two sides were level four times. Brian Molloy and Rob O’Shea were crucial for Maynooth and UCC respectively, each converting five frees in the first 30 minutes alone.
Maynooth’s MJ Lalor was denied a goal by Dylan Desmond on 28 minutes before the teams went in at half-time level at 0-9 apiece. When UCC returned from the break, they played with conviction and determination, scoring four points without reply.
Four frees from Brian Molloy kept the newly-crowned Kehoe Cup champions in the second half but it was UCC who always had a cushion of at least three points. Jamie Barron and Séamus Kennedy extended the visitors’ lead before Mark O’Brien who sealed the deal at the final whistle.
UCC will play Fitzgibbon surprise packages DCU at home next week in the quarter-finals.
