Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final verdicts: Champions Mary I to book place in final four
There are two Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final places up for grabs on Tuesday when Mary I play NUIG and UCC go up against DCU in the first of the quarter-finals.
(Extra-time if necessary)
Mary I v NUIG, Mary I Grounds, 2.0
Reigning champions Mary I came through their group unbeaten and they have retained the likes of Richie English and Ronan Maher from last year’s side.
The Limerick college look in good shape but they will have to be on their guard against a NUI Galway side looking to secure their place in the Fitzgibbon weekend which they are hosting.
They showed their battling qualities to draw with Cork IT and secure their place in the last eight and have Galway’s Conor Whelan in attack and Clare’s Conor Whelan anchoring the defence, but the Limerick side might have too much.
Odds: Mary I 1/4 NUIG 10/3 Draw 11/1
Verdict: Mary I
UCC v DCU, Mardyke, 3.0
UCC emerged from their group with a 100pc record but go into this game without the services of free-taker Rob O’Shea, who is serving a suspension. The Cork side still have plenty of class, however, and will look to Rebel senior Alan Cadogan for the edge in attack.
DCU made the last eight thanks to their win over Dublin rivals Trinity, with Waterford 2016 All-Ireland U-21 winner Patrick Curran hitting 12 points.
Odds: UCC 1/6 DCU 9/2 Draw 12/1
