Garda College edge past Cork IT in Independent.ie Sigerson Cup opener
NOT a fixture that will live long in the memory but Garda College won’t mind after giving themselves a crack at Sigerson revenge when they face Ulster University in Round 2.
Garda College 0-8 Cork IT 0-3
Garda cruised to a five-point victory against Cork IT on a real wintry afternoon in Templemore and their reward is a repeat of last year’s corresponding game against the Jordanstown-based outfit, who won by nine points on that occasion.
CIT were disappointing, wasteful and ill-disciplined as they went crashing out. Midway through the first half, they were three points behind and already forced into two changes following black cards for Jason Lonergan and Dan Daly.
It took until the 27th minute for CIT, with the aid of the breeze, to register their opening point and at half-time, they were 0-1 to 0-3 adrift after registering ten wides.
Garda picked up where they had left off in the second half with dominance of possession around the middle third, and the ability to win marks, proving crucial.
Points from Limerick’s Seamus O’Carroll (two), Clare star Eoin Cleary and Longford midfielder Darren Gallagher opened up a 0-7 to 0-1 advantage before CIT scored raised just their second white flag with nine minutes left.
Kieran Murphy rattled the Garda crossbar late on and before the winners lost substitute Teddy Doyle to a red card for a second bookable offence.
