14-man DIT march on in Independent.ie Sigerson Cup
DIT 1-13 AIT 0-11
Despite having to play over half the game with 14 men, DIT ultimately claimed a fairly comfortable victory over AIT in this Sigerson Cup first round clash at chilly Athlone last night.
DIT Midfielder Ian Fahey was sent off after being shown a black card in the 18th minute, having picked up an earlier yellow. However, AIT couldn't make the extra man count against their physically stronger opponents.
The Dublin side started brightly and surged into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead inside seven minutes, the goal coming from Galway's Martin Farragher, who exploited some slack marking in the AIT defence.
But with fellow Galwegian Mark Rohan leading the way at wing-forward, a spirited Athlone outfit gradually gained a foothold. Three pointed frees from Kildare's Cein McMonagle, and two points from Rohan, left just two between them close to the half hour mark. But with Cavan's Conor Madden raising four white flags in the first half, DIT still led 1-7 to 0-6 at half-time.
Close to the midway stage of the second half, there was just three between them (1-9 to 0-9), but a fine long-range free from the impressive Madden gave DIT the impetus to clinch victory. Points from Ciaran Thompson (Donegal) and Thomas Corcoran (Roscommon) put the seal on DIT's expected passage to the next round.
