Tipp cry foul as controversial call hands Wexford a replay
Tipperary 0-12 Wexford 2-6
Captain Fiona Rochford's last-gasp free salvaged a draw for Wexford in a gripping decider against Tipperary at Clane.
There was high drama at the very end as referee John Niland stepped in when Tipp's Jennifer Grant took too long over a free, overturning the award and handing the Slaneysiders a chance to level.
Rochford duly obliged with the last kick of the game and the two sides must battle it out again for the right to play Division 2 football next year.
Tipp, who lost a Division 3 final replay against Waterford last year, recovered from a poor start when Aisling Murphy netted in the second minute.
Tipp's leading scorer, Aisling McCarthy, was then sin-binned, but the Premier County coped well, the impressive Aishling Moloney scoring two points.
Murphy struck again in the 18th minute, fisting Catriona Murray's speculative delivery to the net.
Tipp, though, were in touch at the break, trailing by 2-1 to 0-5, and signalled their second-half intentions when Moloney raced through to score from the throw-in.
With 13 minutes to play, the teams were level until McCarthy's seventh point, and fifth free, looked to have claimed victory for Tipp.
But there was still time for Rochford to do the necessary from a free, with Tipp arguing that the ball should have been thrown up when Grant was penalised.
