'When Ger was in Galway, a 10-point loss to Kilkenny was probably the highlight of it' - Canning hits back at Loughnane
Former Galway hurler Ollie Canning has blasted back at Ger Loughnane after the former Tribesmen boss lambasted Micheal Donoghue's men following their Leinster Final defeat to Kilkenny.
Loughnane labelled the Galway players as "gutless" in his column in the Irish Daily Star after they let a half-time lead slip to eventually lose by seven points to the Cats in Croke Park last Sunday.
"We often had stuff thrown at us after a bad or weak performance. You have to take that as a player," Canning told Newstalk's Off The Ball.
"On your (Newstalk) Twitter page you had, 'are Galway gutless'?
"I think that's a real insult to put out there for anyone to say that, whether that's quoted off a paper or whatever.
"Ger (Loughnane) will say things. He had comments about Kilkenny earlier as well. When Ger was in Galway, a 10-point loss to Kilkenny was probably the highlight of it.
"For me, I don't consider any inter-county hurlers gutless. I think they go our there and do their best.
"They train hard. It didn't work out the last day. This result is not like Iceland beating England. This is a fantastic Kilkenny team that brings on Richie Hogan and he scores five points from play in the second half. It's a phenomenal team."
