Fingal's hope of making the league final suffered a big blow in Kilbarrack yesterday after Mark Treanor struck for what proved to be the decisive goal in this lively affair.

Fingal were dominant early on with an Eoin Thynne goal on 10 minutes helping them into a six-point lead.

However Monaghan's response was quick with Treanor setting up Brian McGuigan for a goal just short of the quarter hour.

They grabbed a second on the half-hour when Stephen Lambe fired to the net after McGuigan had pulled the ball back from the end line.

That was to see the visitors up by 2-10 to 1-12 at the interval and while Fingal were to hit back with three unanswered scores from JM Sheridan (2) and Luke Kelly, they were then to lose Thynne to a second yellow on 38 minutes.

And an injury to defender Johnny Fay Watt would further destabilise Fingal, with Treanor grabbing Monaghan's third with a minute to go.

And despite seven additional minutes of injury-time, Fingal were unable to find a way back despite a late effort from Iain Furlong which was tipped over for a point by the Monaghan 'keeper.
