Supersub John Coyne was the hero as Roscommon backed up their Nicky Rackard Cup success by beating Mayo in the curtain-raiser at Pearse Stadium yesterday to claim a place in the Christy Ring Cup next year.

Coyne, who struck 2-3 after being introduced, said he now hoped Roscommon hurling would push on after the success enjoyed this year.

"The win was the most important thing, we couldn't afford to lose this one. I think we needed it more than Mayo and we were back to square one if we lost," he said.

"It might set up a platform for them next year and hopefully we can kick on. We needed this more than them and I think it showed out there," said Coyne.

The win also secures the Connacht intermediate crown in addition to sending Mayo down to the Nicky Rackard Cup next year.

"Someone would have done it if I hadn't but it was nice to get in and help out, anything I can do for the team is worth it.

"I only came back for the championship, I have a dodgy ankle. I just came back for a bit of training before the Nicky Rackard and thankfully it paid off."

Coyne got both goals in the second half after the sides went in 0-7 to 0-7 at half-time, with Micheal Kelly - the star of last week's Nicky Rackard win over Armagh - once again to the fore.

Coyne had an immediate impact: he sent over a point after just a minute and then in the 41st minute found the net.

Roscommon raced into a 1-10 to 0-8 lead but as the Mayo fans filtered in for the football game, the Green and Red began to pick up on the field.

Feeney was their star in this period and by the time he hit his sixth point of the day they only trailed by two, but Coyne was on a roll and he netted his second with nine minutes left to seal the win.
