Having trailed by 0-7 to 0-5 coming up to half-time, the visitors - managed by Nicky English, a Fitzgibbon legend with UCC - led at the break as two O'Rorke frees sandwiched a goal by him, excellently created by Ross King.

UCC responded well at the start of the second half, with their best attacker Alan Cadogan prominent, and twice they cut the gap back to just a point.

However, on 44 minutes UCD got the game's decisive score as James Maher cut a swathe through the home defence and, after his shot was saved by Keith Hogan, Colm Cronin pounced to net the rebound.

Maher followed that with a point for a five-point lead but scores from Rob O'Shea and Cadogan gave UCC hope, albeit with time running out.

An O'Rorke free, his sixth, gave UCD breathing space again and when UCC had their best goal chance as the game moved into injury time, DJ Foran shot into the side-netting.

O'Rorke wrapped up the win for UCD, who will advance to the quarter-finals if they beat Limerick IT next Tuesday.

UCC must beat Maynooth University in their next game to stay in the competition.
