There was no surprise in Newry's Páirc Esler where Derry's Slaughtneil led all the way to defeat Armagh champions Middletown by 10 points.

Cormac O'Doherty top scored for the Derry champions with 1-8 while first-half goals from Cormac McKenna and Gerald Bradley proved the crucial scores.

But just when the Middletown challenge appeared to be dead, they came back into contention - chiselling away with their free-taking, before Shaun Toal scored an early second-half goal to leave Middletown just 2-10 to 1-8 in arrears.

Slaughtneil regrouped, however, and hit the last four scores of the contest, including an Oisin O'Doherty penalty.

Scorers- Slaughtneil: C O'Doherty 1-8 (0-5fs), O O'Doherty (1-0 pen) G Bradley, C McKenna 1-1 each, B Rogers 0-3, M McGuigan and S McGuigan 0-1 each

Middletown: D Gaffney 0-4 (3fs), N Curry 0-4 (4fs), S Toal 1-0, P McBride 0-1, R Gaffney, C Carville, R Gaffney 0-1 each.
