Dan Nevin scored nine points as Galway continued their exciting start to the new season.

Micheal Donoghue's side had crushed DIT by 21 points at the weekend, while NUI Galway were beaten 3-18 to 0-22 by Laois, yet NUI Galway were in charge at the break at Ballinasloe last night, leading by 0-11 to 0-5 after playing with the elements.

Midfielder Nevin scored Galway's first point after three minutes, but Aiden Helebert soon replied.

Galway wouldn't lead again for the half - full-forward Jason Flynn, who scored 0-7 against DIT, was constantly off-target with his frees.

At the other end NUI Galway began to find their range and with captain Conor Cleary scoring two massive frees, they hit six points in a row and led 0-10 to 0-3 by the 33rd minute.

Galway needed to score next and crucially Sean Loftus got the next point either side of two Ger Hennelly efforts, and the dead-eyed Nevin closed off the first-half scoring.
