Monaghan withstood a late Louth fightback to edge a close game in Darver in conditions that proved difficult for both sides.

Monaghan thought they had a goal on 10 minutes when keeper Hugh Byrne sent home a penalty, but ref Alfie Devine disallowed it as he adjudged Byrne to have struck the sliotar past the 20-metre line.

There was nothing wrong with Tadhg Campbell's strike, though, as he gave Monaghan a 1-6 to 0-1 half-time lead.

Louth sub Davy Mahony fired to the net after the break and with five minutes left Diarmuid Murphy reduced Monaghan's lead to just two points (1-8 to 1-6), before Campbell and Fergal Rafter steadied the ship for the visitors.
