Having only made their Fitzgibbon Cup debut in 2013, Mary Immaculate College reached a second final as they set up an-Limerick clash with UL by overcoming Davy Fitzgerald's LIT at Cork IT.
A war of attrition in poor conditions, the first half produced 16 wides but only nine scores.
While LIT's Alan Dempsey hit the game's opening point in the second minute, they wouldn't score again until the 23rd. Mary I should have had more than three points on board by that stage but three more, from Darragh O'Donovan (long-range free), David Reidy and Declan Hannon, made it 0-6 to 0-2 before Peter Duggan had the last score of the half for LIT.
Diarmaid Byrnes converted a free upon the resumption to bring the gap to two but Hannon replied and that was the way of it for much of the second period. Hannon's fourth point put Mary I 0-10 to 0-6 ahead, but LIT responded well in the closing stages. A Byrnes' 65 and Duggan's free made it a two-point game and then, having just sent a free wide, Byrnes pointed from play on 60 minutes to make it 0-10 to 0-9.
An equaliser remained elusive, however, and Eamong Cregan's Mary I worked the ball up the field, with Séamus Kennedy fouled and Hannon sending the free over.
