Once a Clare man, always a Clare man! Davy Fitzgerald may be very much in Wexford's corner (the naughty boys' corner until June 11!) these days but his Banner background follows him.

He was even referred to as "the Clare manager" in the referee's report - a copy of which dropped in this column's direction - of the incident in the league semi-final which prompted his eight-week ban.

"17 min of first half while I was cautioning a Wexford player - the Clare manager was involved in an altercation on the field of play which I didn't witness but is reported by the 4th official in his report, included with this report," wrote referee Diarmuid Kirwan.

Presumably, the error was corrected before the ban was proposed. While Kirwan allowed the fourth official's report to take care of the Fitzgerald intervention, he delivered some sharp barbs over the technology provided for linking up with his officials.

"For such an important game, the quality of the communication system can only be described as awful. Very disappointing," he wrote.
