Maher's lethal for Laois
Laois 1-26 Offaly 1-20
Laois picked up their first win in Division 1B with a comfortable victory over 13-man Offaly.
Kevin Ryan's charges had a man sent off either side of half-time, as Laois proved too strong. The six-point winning margin probably flattered the visitors to O'Moore Park, with a late flurry of points making things easier on the eye.
Offaly, coming into the game on the back of a 26-point hammering to Galway, started strongly, with Oisín Kelly's goal seeing them lead 1-2 to no score after six minutes
Laois were seeking to exorcise some demons of their own after the capitulation against Kerry and they quickly hauled themselves level. Picky Maher and Cha Dwyer pointed before Neil Foyle raced through for a brilliant goal.
The hosts finally started to wrestle control of the game in the run-up to half-time, however, as they went on a run of five unanswered points.
Maher (2), Dwyer (2) and Willie Dunphy all hit the target, with Offaly's Sean Gardiner then red-carded for a crude tackle on sub Cian Taylor. Maher tapped over the resulting free, and Laois lead by five.
Shane Dooley got a point back for Offaly before the break, but Laois lead 1-12 to 1-8 after an exciting opening period.
They started the second-half brightly, with three points in as many minutes. Offaly's hopes of a comeback were all but dashed when Aidan Treacy was red-carded for an off-the-ball incident.
The pace of the game slowed down, and while Offaly did narrow the gap, Laois were still comfortable winners.
