The funeral of Michael Maher (87), one of the famed members of Tipperary's 'Hell's Kitchen' trio, will take place this morning (10.0) at the Church of St Joseph and St Brigid, Thurles with burial afterwards in Holycross Cemetery.

Maher, together with John Doyle (1930-2010) and Kieran Carey (1933-2007), formed a legendary defensive barrier in an era when the Premier won five All-Ireland senior hurling titles.

The Holycross-Ballycahill clubman (above) - widely regarded as one of the fiercest full-backs of his or any generation - was also a noted administrator and served as chairman of Tipp County Board (1979-'82) and the Munster Council. He died on Wednesday after a long illness.

In Thursday's edition, a wrong picture appeared with an article on his death - we would like to apologise and offer our deepest sympathies to the Maher family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
