Magical Mullen inspires Kieran's to Leinster hat-trick
St Kieran's College 1-14 Kilkenny Cbs 0-13
A somewhat lucky goal in the 62nd minute by sub Sean Ryan, when goalkeeper Ben Maher appeared to be blinded by the sun, sealed a third Leinster Schools win on the trot for All-Ireland champions St Kieran's at Nowlan Park yesterday.
Just seconds beforehand, a well-struck sideline cut by Conor Drennan barely missed the target, as Leinster league champions Kilkenny CBS tried desperately to force a draw.
However, in Kieran's next raid Ryan let fly from about 60 metres and while initially Maher appeared to have it covered, the ball ended up in the net.
CBS had first use of the strong wind, but they looked in a bit of trouble at half-time when a mere 0-7 to 0-6 in front.
Indeed, Kieran's might have been ahead as just before the break Evan Shefflin was deprived of a goal by a smashing save from Maher - who also contributed two scores from long-range frees.
It was tit-for-tat after that, with Dáithí Barron and Adrian Mullen on target for Kieran's and Sean Boyd replying for CBS.
The outstanding Mullen then hit a brace of points in the last five minutes before Ryan's rather fortunate, late goal.
