Limerick eventually won a wild and exciting semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds.
Twelve points ahead in the opening period, Limerick then had to deal with a gutsy Tipperary revival which saw the Premier boys draw level.
But John Kiely’s charges got the job done in the end to set up a July 30 provincial decider with Clare.
With Cian Lynch and David Dempsey were full of energy in attack Limerick enjoyed a hugely productive first half before a Tipp rally trimmed the deficit.
Lynch’s splendid goal after 14 seconds signalled their intent, and they surged into a 1-7 to 0-2 advantage by the 22nd minute.
Then a swift move ended with a sublime Robbie Hanley goal in the 23rd minute.
But Colin O’Riordan, a key figure for the senior footballers, blasted two goals either side of a Stephen Cahill point to give Tipp hope as they trailed 2-9 to 2-4 at the break.
After the restart Limerick’s Barry O’Connell was sent off for a second bookable offence, but Tom Morrissey’s goal put them five clear.
Tadhg Gallagher replied with a Tipp goal which restored parity, but Limerick, with substitute Colin Ryan to the fore, finished strongly.
Michael Breen was sent off for Tipp at the end for a foul on Lynch before Ryan’s free sealed the deal.
